Epsom leather was introduced by Hermès around 2004, replacing the earlier “Courchevel” leather. It is a type of embossed calfskin with fine grains. When Shebag began making handbags in 2011, Epsom leather was already very famous.

Hermès publicly states that it strictly controls its leather sourcing, tanning, and dyeing. The group owns multiple tanneries and manufacturing facilities in France. Because Epsom and Togo leathers are used in such huge volumes, Hermès gradually increased its control over certain factories — especially in France.

However, Hermès uses different strategies to control these leather suppliers:
some factories are fully acquired, some partially owned, some under long-term partnerships, and some only cooperate occasionally.

Even with fully acquired tanneries, leather sometimes still flows into the broader European market. And factories in which Hermès is only a partial stakeholder cannot restrict external leather sales at all.
