Letter embossing is by no means a simple process. Shebag customizes molds based on the letter forms of the authentic bag and continuously polishes them. Customizing molds is always the crucial step in serious replication; only through custom molding and reverse engineering can a 1:1 replication effect be achieved. However, this process significantly increases costs. Ordinary replicas often seek molds with similar letter forms to save on expenses, but if every step only aims for 90% similarity, after 100 details, the entire bag becomes an obvious fake.

The letter stamp on the Hermès Bolide is a heat-pressed blind stamp process, not mechanical engraving or cold pressing. Its essence lies in using a heated metal mold to press into the leather fibers in a single motion while the leather is briefly heated and softened. This causes the font to form a natural depression rather than being cut or etched.

The content of the Bolide stamp typically consists of three parts: the brand name “Hermès Paris,” the origin “MADE IN FRANCE,” and the date letter with workshop hallmarks (which may be enclosed in a square, a circle, or frameless, depending on the era). The font is sans-serif with rounded terminals. It does not pursue absolute geometric symmetry and naturally allows for subtle differences in height and thickness. This reflects typical handmade logic rather than industrial font standards.

The stamp molds are primarily made of brass. Brass offers gentle thermal conductivity and pressure feedback, allowing it to create depressions without damaging the leather fibers. Hermès does not frequently replace these molds; after long-term use, the edges of the letters may show slight blunting, tiny chips, or variations in line thickness. These “traces of wear” are continuously pressed into different bags, creating stable yet not entirely identical workshop characteristics.

During the heat pressing process, temperature, pressure, and time are the three most critical variables. The temperature is kept in a medium-low range to soften the leather without scorching it. The pressure is not a heavy, sustained crush but is short and controlled. The contact time is extremely brief, typically under one second. The mold is removed immediately after stamping, with no re-stamping or edge trimming. This is why authentic stamps often exhibit uneven depth and slightly soft edges, yet look completely natural overall.

Leather type has a massive impact on the appearance of the stamp. Taking common Bolide leathers as examples:

• Clemence: Due to its loose and soft fibers, the stamp sinks deeper with slightly rougher edges, and the leather shows obvious rebound after use.

• Swift: With its fine surface, the stamp outline is relatively clear, but it will become shallower overall over time.

• Box Calf: The leather is dense, so the stamp is pressed very shallowly. In older bags, it is common for the stamp to become almost invisible, which is completely normal in the original factory logic.

In principle, Hermès workshops do not allow “re-stamping.” A second heat press would destroy the already formed leather fiber structure, causing hardening or a “stepped” effect at the edges, losing the natural transition. Therefore, the authentic stamp is a one-shot process; even if it is slightly shallow, crooked, or imperfect, it will not be pressed again.

With time and usage, a genuine Bolide stamp will gradually change: the depression becomes shallower, the edges soften, the color blends with the leather surface, and some letters may even fade away. This is a process of being “consumed by time,” rather than becoming clearer with use. Conversely, if a stamp remains sharp with hard edges and increased contrast after aging, it often indicates later re-pressing or refurbishment intervention.

The letter stamp of the Hermès Bolide is not designed for long-term legibility. Instead, it serves as an understated mark of identity that allows for imperfection, accepts leather rebound, and is ultimately slowly worn away by time. This respect for materials and time is the core reason why its craftsmanship is so difficult to truly replicate.
